AC/DC’s Johnson ‘overwhelmed’ by CD’s success

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

AC/DC made their new album, “Black Ice,” available only at Wal-Mart and through their Web site, but that hasn’t limited its success: The CD not only has topped the charts in more than two dozen countries, it debuts atop the latest U.S. album chart with sales of more than 780,000 copies.

“It’s overwhelming, and quite hard to take in,” the legendary group’s lead singer, Brian Johnson, said Wednesday after learning his group had 2008’s second-biggest album debut.

“Even an old dog like me has a few more surprises in life, I guess,” he said, chuckling.

The group beat out “High School Musical” for the No. 1 spot. According to figures released Wednesday by Nielsen SoundScan, “Black Ice” sold some 784,000 copies in its first week of release; the teen-oriented movie soundtrack sold about 297,000 copies. (The year’s biggest album debut so far belongs to Lil Wayne, with a million copies sold of “Tha Carter III.”)

In making Wal-Mart the only retailer for their album, AC/DC joined the likes of the Eagles and Journey, who have all had strong success.

“It was a win-win situation, and they decided to make it into a big thing with AC/DC merchandise and good deals with the other albums with the catalog,” Johnson said. “This has been a wonderful thing.”

The CD has topped the charts in 29 countries since its release in the recent days.

Rubbing your eyes likely to damage vision

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

Routine activities like wearing swim goggles, sleeping face down or doing a gym workout may contribute to glaucoma that damages the optic nerve and leads to blindness, according to a new study.

‘The fluid pressure inside the eye increases - or spikes - during many everyday activities,’ said Charles McMonnies, a professor at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) School of Optometry and Vision Science.

‘Eye rubbing, yoga head stands, weightlifting, sleeping face down, playing instruments like the trumpet and swimming laps are some of the many ways of causing eye pressure spikes,’ McMonnies said.

Any touching of the eye through the eyelids raises pressure: light touch causes a small increase but firm touch can cause a spike three to five times normal pressure, he says.

Wiping a watery eye and removing eye make-up both increase eye pressure, partly because they involve eye closure combined with lid contact.

In the case of eye rubbing, the combined effects of eye closure and rubbing forces on the eye can raise pressure to very high levels; strong rubbing may raise pressure to 10 times normal levels.

‘Normally these pressure spikes are of little consequence and healthy eyes appear to be unaffected by them. But eye-pressure spikes that are large, and/or last a long time, and/or occur frequently, may contribute to the progression of pressure-related eye diseases.’

These diseases include glaucoma - which affects a large proportion of elderly people and can lead to blindness - and rapidly increasing myopia, or short-sightedness. Rarer pressure-related conditions include keratoconus, or conical cornea, said a UNSW release.

‘Avoiding sleeping with the eyes in contact with a pillow or sleep mask may help to slow the progression of pressure-sensitive eye diseases,’ he says.

These findings have been published in Optometry and Vision Science.

China finds fossils of small feathered dinosaur

Saturday, October 25th, 2008

Archaeologists in China have discovered fossils of a pigeon-sized feathered dinosaur which they believe to be an ancestor of birds.

Its remains were found 90 percent complete, preserved in a slab of rock in Inner Mongolia’s Ningcheng county in northern China, the researchers wrote in an article in Nature.

Its four limbs lacked contour feathers for flight and it probably lived from the Middle to Late Jurassic periods, or 176 to 146 million years ago.

This means it is older than the Archaeopteryx, which lived around 155 to 150 million years ago.

Feathered but flightless, the small creature weighed just 164 grams and had buck teeth resembling that of carnivores.

But scientists have no clue what it ate.

“Insects? Other reptiles or amphibians? Or plants?” Professor Fucheng Zhang of the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology at the Chinese Academy of Sciences wrote in reply to a question from Reuters regarding its diet.

Named the Epidexipteryx, it had four long and thin tail feathers and a short tail.

The scientists said it belonged to a different group from the Microraptor, which had flight feathers and which some scientists believe flew sometimes in addition to gliding.

But like the Microraptor — which lived in a later period 130 to 125 million years ago — it gave important evidence about the evolutionary relationship between birds and dinosaurs.

“You could say it was a link between dinosaur and birds. It was very close to the ancestor of birds,” Zhang wrote.

“This new fossil adds yet more complexity to the early history of evolution from dinosaurs to birds.”

Just about everyone should know how to make a basic spreadsheet, but a number of people may be confused on how to make the most of their time in excel.

This means that you might want to look into excel 2003 training for your office. This setup will offer you a nice mix of reliability and function for your everyday use. A good training course will have them making graphs by the end of the first week. This is also important just because of the increased familiarity it will garner. Giving them time to train with the program will make it easier to use overall. Having some time with it will do wonders to their overall chances.

If you have the latest in office software packages, then you could go ahead and get excel 2007 training. This software is fairly simple, so not too much has changed. If you are just upgrading from your current 2003 setup, then you should be able to find a good transition course for just this problem.

EU nations agree to fight online child porn

Friday, October 24th, 2008

European Union nations agreed Friday to better coordinate efforts to curb child pornography and other illegal content on the Internet.

Jacques Barrot, the EU’s justice and home affairs commissioner, said EU justice and interior ministers backed proposals to set up a Europe-wide alert system to better hunt down perpetrators responsible for putting abusive pictures and videos online.

“It will enable EU member states to exchange information more effectively and tackle this serious crime,” Barrot said.

French Interior Minister Michele Alliot-Marie, who chaired Friday’s talks, said the plan would see the EU’s policing and serious crime agency Europol take charge to coordinate alerts.

Under the system, national authorities would be linked to a European data alert system that will spread national notifications to all 27 EU countries when illegal Web sites and their operators are found.

Europol, based in The Hague, Netherlands, will also run a special site where the public can report illicit content.

The aim is to ensure that illegal Web site operators do not escape to another EU country undetected, Alliot-Marie said.

“If we do this together we will be more effective,” she said.

The EU’s justice and interior chiefs have focused more attention of late to fighting cybercrime, which EU officials have now listed as priority.

The bloc has set up a special cyber security agency to coordinate European efforts to protect computer systems from terror threats and hackers.

That agency deals mostly with efforts to counter attacks aimed at crippling the Internet and committing identity theft and fraud.

Equities shed value, key index ends below 10,000

Friday, October 24th, 2008

For the second successive day Indian equities markets finished in the red with a key equities index ending below the psychologically important 10,000 mark.

At the close of trading, the benchmark 30-share sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange finished at 9,771.70, down 398.20 points or 3.92 percent from its previous close Wednesday at 10,169.90 points.

The Sensex opened very weak at 9,683.41, down 486.49 points or 4.8 percent from its previous close Wednesday, hit a low of 9,681.28 and then recovered enough to get into positive territory on short covering before sliding again to finish in the red.

The broader 50-share S&P CNX Nifty index of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) also opened weak and went below the psychologically important 3,000 mark before recovering somewhat to get into positive territory for a few minutes before falling again to finish at 2943.15, down 122 points or 3.98 percent from its previous close Wednesday at 3065.15 points.

The BSE midcap index finished at 3,378.72, down 111.67 points or 3.20 percent from its previous close Wednesday at 3,490.39 points.

The BSE smallcap index closed at 3,965.70, down 145.99 points or 3.55 percent from its previous close Wednesday at 4,111.69 points.

Can Chandrayaan find water on Moon?

Friday, October 24th, 2008

India’s Chandrayaan-1 has begun its journey to the Moon -eagerly to find water on its surface - but there is a disappointing news from the Japanese lunar explorer Selene that has been circling the Moon for about a year.

Scientists, who are operating Selene, say that new images taken by a stereo camera onboard the spacecraft indicate that there may not be water or ice in Shackleton crater, the most likely place on Moon that was thought to have water.

The findings were published online Thursday by the American journal Science.

The inside of the Shackleton crater at the Moon’s south pole is a permanently shadowed area, unexposed for the most part to sunlight and, therefore, a place where water-ice deposits have been inferred to exist.

Based on a model of the crater’s shape, the authors suggest that temperatures on the crater floor are less than minus 180 degrees Centigrade — cold enough to hold ice.

The spacecraft Selene took the images of the crater during the lunar mid-summer - when enough sunlight is scattered off the upper inner wall of the crater to provide some faint illumination. The terrain camera has a 10-meter resolution.

‘But the images reveal no conspicuous brightness that would indicate a patch of pure water-ice. There may be no ice at all, or any ice that exists might be mixed into the soil at low concentrations,’ the researchers conclude.

It is to be seen if Chandrayaan-1 will have better luck. Three of its 11 scientific payloads will look for water in the polar regions including the Shackleton crater.

One of them is the High Energy X-ray Spectrometer built by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO).

According to ISRO, this is the first planetary experiment to carry out spectral studies at those X-ray energies capable of identifying polar regions covered by thick water-ice deposits.

The other is the Mini Synthetic Aperture Radar (MiniSAR) supplied by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) of the US.

According to NASA documents, MiniSAR is mainly intended for detecting water-ice in the permanently shadowed regions of the lunar poles up to a depth of a few meters. It can optimally distinguish water-ice from the dry lunar surface.

The other NASA-supplied payload - Moon Mineralogy Mapper - is an imaging spectrometer. It is mainly intended to assess and map lunar mineral resources but ISRO says ‘may also help in identifying water-ice in the lunar polar areas’.

If everything goes as planned, Chandrayaan-1 will start hunting for water on the Moon from November end.

Titans’ challenge to chase, sack Manning

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

Peyton Manning sat in with the Tennessee Titans‘ defensive line meeting Wednesday. Not in person, but as a life-size decal stuck on the wall.

The Titans know only too well that getting to the two-time MVP is never easy. They’ve sacked him only 11 times in 13 games against the Indianapolis Colts, but that remains the top goal defensively as the Titans prepare to play their AFC South rival on Monday night.

“I’m just looking at getting after Peyton,” defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth said. “That’s our whole key: just to get him off his spot, to hit him as many times as we can, just to rattle him. That’s our whole goal. I know as a defensive front, you go in our room you see that Fathead of Peyton on our wall, so that’s what we’re looking for.”

Getting to Manning has been challenging for Tennessee over the years. The Titans went through four straight games in 2005 and 2006 without sacking Manning even once. Even as they became a playoff team last season, they still only sacked Manning twice, although a big hit by Kyle Vanden Bosch on Manning led to Cortland Finnegan’s first career interception.

This season, the Titans have 18 sacks that have them ranked sixth in the NFL. Haynesworth already has matched his career high with six through the first six games, and sacking Manning could be a big step toward the Titans improving the best start in franchise history to 7-0 and seizing control of the division.

Protecting Manning is the Colts’ main goal, something that has been tougher for Indianapolis (3-3) with two rookies starting at guard the past three games: Mike Pollak and Jamey Richard. Manning has been sacked nine times through the first three games. Green Bay didn’t sack Manning in last week’s 34-14 win, but returned two interceptions for touchdowns.

Defensive end Jevon Kearse said the Colts, who had Wednesday off, have a scheme for Manning to get rid of the ball quickly.

“He’s a smart guy back there when he has a football in his hands. He gets rid of the ball on time,” Kearse said.

Kearse hasn’t had a chance to chase Manning since 2003, when he was last with the Titans. He missed the Colts’ game while with Philadelphia in 2006 because of a knee injury, but he did sack Manning’s brother, Eli, five times in two games combined in 2005 and 2006. Kearse has only 1 1/2 sacks and nine quarterback pressures since re-signing with Tennessee this offseason.

He can’t wait for Monday night’s bright lights.

“They say freaks come out at night,” the defensive end nicknamed the Freak said. “I’m waiting to have my one big breakout game.”

The Titans aren’t buying into talk that Manning isn’t quite himself after needing two surgeries on his left knee, procedures that kept him out of the preseason. Manning still is completing 60.7 percent of his passes even though he has only one more touchdown pass (eight) than interceptions (seven).

“You don’t see any evidence of any problems with his lower body,” Titans coach Jeff Fisher said.

“He’s setting up, he’s scrambling, runs for a first downs if need be. He’s throwing with accuracy. They’ve played several games that they very well could have won, so the record’s misleading, and I think the buzz out there is misleading. He always shows up big in big games like this so we’ll get him at his best.”
