Trail cameras – How to use it with animals

Wednesday, December 31st, 2008

The obvious and intelligent option is to take up trail cameras and hide it in the place where the animal frequently visits. The camera should be hidden properly so that the animal won’t see it or damage it. If the trail cameras are properly camouflaged and placed the only way the animal can find the camera is through smell or scent around to camera. So try to avoid this as well.

Digital rangefinder cameras can also be used equally like trail cameras but range finder cameras are losing its shine to single lens reflex cameras. The digital rangefinder cameras were popular in 1930s to 1970 but now there are modern cameras with advanced technologies which have over taken the digital rangefinder cameras.

As trail cameras and digital rangefinders are for hunting we need to have predator calls also to complete the hunting baggage packing. There are different types of predator calls. Some even allows the users to add different sound to the instruments. In some cases there might be some limitations on the number of sound added based on the money that you have paid. These are called pre programmed predator calls. Based on your need you can choose your predator calls.

Nokia unveils 2 new multimedia phones

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

Nokia (NOK1V.HE: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) unveiled two new high-end phone models, the N79 and the N85, as the world’s top cellphone maker battles against increasing competition from the likes of Apple (AAPL.O: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) and Samsung (005930.KS: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz). The news lifted shares in Nokia more than 2 percent on Tuesday as it reassured investors the company was on track to refresh its offering for the key Christmas sales period.

“Nokia sailed through first half of the year with little changes in its phone portfolio. Now the portfolio renewal has started and this should boost profitability,” said Pohjola analyst Hannu Rauhala.

Newer and more expensive models usually have higher profit margins than older and cheaper phones.

The N79 and N85 models will go on sale in October. Both new phones, upgrades of Nokia’s older models, will have 5 megapixel cameras and pre-loaded games.

The N85 will retail for 450 euros ($662), excluding operator subsidies and taxes, and the N79 will go on sale for 350 euros.

Nokia, which controls 40 percent of the global cellphone market, has an even higher market share among the most expensive phones, helped by the success of its flagship N95 model.

“All manufacturers are trying to sustain or extend their high-tier device portfolios because of the higher margins they offer,” said Ben Wood, research director at CCS Insight.

“Furthermore in saturated markets, in Western Europe and North America replacement sales depend on offering consumers something compelling over and above voice and text,” Wood said.

Since last year Nokia’s leading position has been under attack from sleek touch screen models from LG Electronics (066570.KS: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz), Samsung and Apple.

Nokia is set to come out with its first touch screen phone, codenamed “Tube”, this year.

Shares in Nokia were 2.7 percent higher at 17.78 euros by 7:37 a.m. EDT, outperforming a firmer DJ Stoxx European technology shares index.

Verizon, Google close to mobile search deal: report

Tuesday, August 26th, 2008

Mobile service provider Verizon Communications Inc. is nearing an agreement with Google Inc. on a wide-ranging partnership, the Wall Street Journal said, citing people familiar with the situation. The deal under discussion would make Google the default search provider on Verizon devices and give it a share of ad revenue, the paper said.

The deal is not yet final and the two sides are still negotiating on key issues, such as Google’s desire to save information from user cellphone searches, it added.

The online search giant has reportedly been in talks with the number-two U.S. mobile carrier over a possible alliance for almost a year now.

Verizon and Google are hoping to conclude the discussions in the next few weeks and the mobile carrier eventually wants to put the Google search bar on the home screen of its phones, the paper said.

Both Verizon and Google were not immediately available for comments.

Google had crossed swords with U.S. wireless operators such as Verizon late last year when it successfully lobbied with the U.S. government, forcing operators to open up access to their networks ahead of the spectrum auction.

The company is rapidly extending its reach beyond pay per-click Web search ads into a variety of new markets, including telecommunications and online video. The first phones based on Google’s much-anticipated Android mobile operating system are expected to hit the market around Christmas.

Former DirecTV head named LA Times publisher

Monday, August 18th, 2008

Eddy Hartenstein, a former head of DirecTV, will become publisher of the Los Angeles Times, the newspaper reported Saturday.

Hartenstein, a pioneering satellite television executive with no newspaper experience, will take over Monday. His job will be to invigorate a newspaper that has cut hundreds of jobs as it struggles with plunging circulation and ad revenue in the Internet age.

Hartenstein will be the fourth Times publisher since the newspaper was acquired in 2000 by the Chicago-based Tribune Co. The post has been vacant since David Hiller resigned on July 14, the same day that Tribune began implementing more staff cutbacks.

Hartenstein, 57, said he was approached for the job about a month ago by Tribune chief Sam Zell, who did not demand any more cuts.

“I wanted to know that I would have the ability . . . to call the shots,” Hartenstein said Friday.

Zell “basically said ‘You’re the publisher and CEO. It’s yours to run,’” Hartenstein said.

Hartenstein, an engineer who graduated from the California Institute of Technology, is considered one of the founding fathers of satellite television. He was working for Hughes Electronics Corp., which was later acquired by General Motors Corp., when he began considering the use of satellites to deliver TV programming.

In the 1990s, he persuaded GM to finance a venture that would become DirecTV Group Inc. He became the company’s president and was chairman and CEO from 2001 to 2004.

DirecTV introduced small satellite dishes that could be mounted on practically any roof, wall or balcony, in comparison to the large backyard dishes then in general use by satellite TV subscribers.

Hartenstein went on to serve on the boards of SanDisk Corp., XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc., Broadcom Corp. and the City of Hope hospital in Duarte.

He was inducted into the Broadcasting and Cable Hall of Fame in 2002 and received an Emmy Award for lifetime achievement from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in 2007.

Does anybody know how to get cable for free or get more channels through an antenna please help?

Friday, July 11th, 2008

Many times cable develops tears in the insulation that makes it “leak” signal and this signal can be captured by a nearby directional Over The Air antenna. The cable companies work hard to detect signal leaks, you may have noticed cable company vans with a bunch of antennas from time to time, these detect leaks and signal thieves. if someone in your area is getting cable illegaly and is using cheap RG-59 cable, that cable will leak signal that can also be captured. If succesful, only a few analog channels will be visible and the quality will be very bad, by law you are required to report any signal leaks to the CATV company.

To legaly get more channels, get yourself an HDTV and a good antenna in your roof so you can get free over the air channels in addition to your current analog. Dont bother with indoor antennas as these are hardly sensitive, even the really expensive ones, nothing beats a roof top antenna, made even better with a rotator motor. OTA HDTV signals can travel a long distance with minimal loss so if you invest in a good antenna and a rotator , $100 or more , you may get channels from far away places, The hobby is called TVDXing

What is the difference between surround speakers and regular?

Monday, June 9th, 2008

Is it the speaker itself or the audio channel it’s connected to?
In other words can any speaker be connected to the surround channel?

Ideally they are identical.

Back in the ProLogic days there was 1 channel for the rear which was split to the 2 speakers. Dolby told sound engineers to only put diffuse sounds (wind, rain, rumbles) to these speakers and recommended the use of dipole speakers or speakers turned to bounce sound off the wall to help hide the location.

Dolby Digital 5.1 changed all that. Each rear speaker gets a separate channel of sound and sound engineers WANT to draw your attention to the specific speaker.

Since they are making sounds swirl around now - ideally all your 5 or 7 speakers are identical to tone-match.

—–

In small installations there is no difference whatsoever. I have five identical speakers and they work just fine. In large installations the two main speakers are usually floor standing speakers and if a screen is used or if the TV is mounted high enough a floor stander can be used for the center speaker too. Highly recommended. It is best by far to have the three front speakers identical.

Surround speakers should be mounted at or just slightly above ear level at the sides of the room, not behind you. If you have a seven speaker set up the two additional speakers go behind you. Obviously if this mounting scheme will not work for your room it can be modified.

There are special speakers for surround in high end installations to give a more diffuse image but I can’t make a recommendation on this. You’ll just have to listen for yourself and choose what sounds best to you.
