Jon Stewart, Lily Tomlin honor George Carlin, 3rd Ld-Writethru

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

The late comedian George Carlin famous for those “Seven Words You Can Never Say on TV” was honored Monday with the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, the only award he saw as a legitimate comedy prize. Jon Stewart, Lily Tomlin, Joan Rivers and others saluted Carlin at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts for inspiring their own comedy, and they took up his cause of pushing the boundaries of free speech.

Actor and comedian Dennis Leary said he grew up in a church that listed banned books and records in the bulletin each Sunday, including Carlin’s “Class Clown” and “Seven Words.” Leary said he and his fellow altar boys immediately pooled their money to listen to Carlin’s “Seven Words.

” “That was when I realized you could make money for saying things my dad used to say when he was fixing the car,” Leary said. On the red carpet before the show, Stewart said he was about 10 years old when Carlin’s album “Class Clown” was released.

Stewart said it made him the funniest kid at school until his friends also found Carlin’s work. “For all his antiestablishment cred, he was a working man.

He punched in. He sat down and he wrote,” Stewart said.

“He respected what he did.” A handful of protesters gathered on Pennsylvania Avenue near the Kennedy Center, some holding signs saying “Carlin’s Going to Hell.

” The prize was announced shortly before Carlin died of heart failure in June at the age of 71. This is the first time in its 11 years that the award was presented posthumously.

The program will be aired later on PBS stations. “He was thrilled,” Carlin’s daughter, Kelly Carlin McCall, told The Associated Press shortly before the award ceremony.

“I think he represented a lot of what Mark Twain did for our country, not only being smart and funny but also being a sharp commentator.” The Twain Prize was instituted in 1998 and first given to comedian and actor Richard Pryor.

Recent recipients have included Billy Crystal in 2007 and Steve Martin in 2005. Carlin had great respect for the prize and its previous honorees, said Jerry Hamza, Carlin’s longtime manager and best friend.

Carlin “always flipped” over the comedy of Tomlin and Pryor, two previous recipients. “He would have been humbly grateful,” Hamza told The AP. “Also George, who throughout his career was perceived as an outsider or maverick, had a real desire to connect with other comedians.

He loved being in that club.” Carlin’s career as a comedian, actor and author spanned more than 50 years.

He was paired for a brief time with longtime friend Jack Burns, then went solo in 1962, growing his hair long and embracing the counterculture movement of the era. He would record 23 comedy albums, win four Grammys, serve as the first host of “Saturday Night Live” and make more than a dozen TV specials for HBO. His “Seven Words” routine was arguably his most famous.

It was the subject of a U.S. Supreme Court ruling on free speech that upheld the government’s right to sanction broadcasters who air offensive language when children might be listening. Carlin remained active right until his death, and his 14th and final HBO special, “It’s Bad For Ya,” in which he mocks death, is scheduled for release on DVD on Nov.

25. His 1984 album, “Carlin on Campus,” was rereleased earlier this month.

When her father died, McCall said, he left behind an uncompleted autobiography. It is scheduled to be published next year, with herself, Carlin’s brother, Patrick, and others filling in the parts he didn’t get to finish.

Many of the comics, including Bill Maher, used the recent election and the ceremony’s proximity to the oval office as fodder for a slew of politically charged jokes. “It’s a great day to be an American again.

We have a president who can speak English,” Maher said, jabbing President Bush’s famous verbal flubs. Though Carlin said he didn’t vote in presidential elections, he was a keen political observer and commentator.

“On certain things you’d call him a lefty,” Hamza said. “On other things, you’d be surprised how conservative he might be .

He was all for the (Iraq) war until he found out the basis was false.” ___ Associated Press writer John Rogers in Los Angeles contributed to this report.

AC/DC’s Johnson ‘overwhelmed’ by CD’s success

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

AC/DC made their new album, “Black Ice,” available only at Wal-Mart and through their Web site, but that hasn’t limited its success: The CD not only has topped the charts in more than two dozen countries, it debuts atop the latest U.S. album chart with sales of more than 780,000 copies.

“It’s overwhelming, and quite hard to take in,” the legendary group’s lead singer, Brian Johnson, said Wednesday after learning his group had 2008’s second-biggest album debut.

“Even an old dog like me has a few more surprises in life, I guess,” he said, chuckling.

The group beat out “High School Musical” for the No. 1 spot. According to figures released Wednesday by Nielsen SoundScan, “Black Ice” sold some 784,000 copies in its first week of release; the teen-oriented movie soundtrack sold about 297,000 copies. (The year’s biggest album debut so far belongs to Lil Wayne, with a million copies sold of “Tha Carter III.”)

In making Wal-Mart the only retailer for their album, AC/DC joined the likes of the Eagles and Journey, who have all had strong success.

“It was a win-win situation, and they decided to make it into a big thing with AC/DC merchandise and good deals with the other albums with the catalog,” Johnson said. “This has been a wonderful thing.”

The CD has topped the charts in 29 countries since its release in the recent days.

Star Trek will be big if Obama becomes Prez, says Zachary Quinto

Friday, October 17th, 2008

Star Trek’s new Spock insists that the new sci-fi blockbuster will be more successful at the U.S. box office if Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama wins the race to the White House.

According to actor Zachary Quinto, Obama’s optimism will drive film fans to see films that have positive messages - like Star Trek.

“This is a franchise that offers hope for unity, and so does Barack Obama,” the Daily Express quoted Quinto, as telling Entertainment Weekly magazine.

“When this movie comes out, and Obama is President, hopefully there will be some parallels,” Quinto added.

Meanwhile, the original Spock, Leonard Nimoy reckons that the film should have been released prior to next month’s U.S. election - to give movie fans a boost amid gloomy economic and environmental crises.

“My only regret is that the movie can’t come out sooner. I think the world could use it. Don’t you?” he said.

Elvis’ look-alike marble head fetches £24,000

A Roman marble head that looks like King of Rock ‘n’ Roll Elvis Presley sold for a whopping 24,000 pounds at auction on October 15.

The 13-inches marble figure had come from a 2nd century AD sarcophagus.

The head was later bought by an unnamed collector at a Bonhams sale in London.

“It bears an uncanny likeness to Elvis. It’s the quiff that does it. It wasn’t a hairstyle of the day as far as I know,” the Daily Express quoted Antiquities specialist Georgiana Aitken as saying.

Ringo Starr says he has no time for fan mail

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

Former Beatles drummer Ringo Starr has told his fans in a bizarre online video message to stop sending him fan mail as he is too busy to sign or read it, and it will only be “tossed”.

This is a serious message to everybody watching my update right now. Peace and love, peace and love,” the musician said.

“I want to tell you please — after the 20th of October do not send fan mail to any address that you have. Nothing will be signed after the 20th of October. If that has the date on the envelope it’s going to be tossed.

“I’m warning you with peace and love I have too much to do. So no more fan mail, thank you, thank you, and no objects to be signed. Nothing.”

Fans of the former Fab Four can, however, still get their Ringo fix with a Ringo Starr bag, “perfect for groceries, the beach or any other daily activities”, sold on the website alongside a Ringo hoodie or t-shirt.
