Maine Hotels

Saturday, May 2nd, 2009

My husband has a business trip soon to Ogunquit. I have been given the job of looking into Ogunquit Maine hotels for him to find out which one he should be staying in. His company give each person a certain budget per day and then it is up to them how much they spend on meals and a room and they can keep whatever is left. We really need some extra money at the moment so I am looking at all of the Ogunquit hotels which are on the cheaper end of the market.

I have also decided to look at places to eat so that I can draw him up a list of healthy but cheap places that he can go. He is keen to save money too but I know that once he is there, he will not have the time to think about prices when he is selecting places to eat, so if we look at it together beforehand then he will not have to worry about it once he is there. I therefore have a list of 10 budget Ogunquit motels and hotels and a list of places for lunches and evening meals and we will sit down together and decide which he will use while he is there. Hopefully we can save a big chunk of money and keep it in our savings account for times when we are struggling with money.

Alitalia sale advisers meet with Air France-KLM

Sunday, August 31st, 2008

Bank managers advising the government on the sale of Alitalia were to discuss the failing airline’s recovery plan Wednesday with Air France-KLM, Italian news reports said.

Top officials of Intesa Sanpaolo were traveling to Paris to present the plan to the Franco-Dutch carrier, which made a failed bid for Alitalia earlier this year.

Intesa Sanpaolo and Air France-KLM declined to comment on the reports.

News of a possible involvement of Air France-KLM came a day after 16 investors joined to create a new company that plans to take over Alitalia’s profitable assets and inject euro1 billion (US$1.5 billion) into the airline.

The group is lead by Roberto Colaninno, the chairman of motorcycle maker Piaggio, as well as Carlo Toto, the head of Italy’s second-largest airline, Air One.

Alitalia’s future has been on hold since Air France-KLM walked out of talks to take over the Italian carrier after reaching an impasse with unions.

Premier Silvio Berlusconi has vowed to save Alitalia and keep it in Italian hands. His government tapped Intesa Sanpaolo as an adviser in trying to sell its 49.9 percent stake in the airline.

News reports say the government is looking to break Alitalia in two, with the new company injecting money in the profitable part and absorbing part of Air One, while Alitalia’s bad assets will be covered by bankruptcy protection.

The government is scheduled to hold a Cabinet meeting Thursday and is expected to discuss possible measures for saving Alitalia. According to recent reports, the Cabinet might discuss changes to an existing bankruptcy protection law.

Alitalia is scheduled to hold a board of directors meeting Friday.

Travel Picks: Nine of the world’s largest for travelers

Saturday, August 23rd, 2008

For travelers keen on size, the BootsnAll Travel Network has come up with a list of nine of the world’s largest travel-related items. This list was compiled by BootnAll Travel Network (http://www.bootsnall.com), a resource for independent travelers, and is not endorsed by Reuters.

1. World’s largest hotel - First World Hotel, Genting Highlands, Pahang, Malaysia

Until recently, all the world’s largest hotels were located in Las Vegas, but late 2006 the First World Hotel in Malaysia has been recognized with that honor. Located in the mountain gambling resort of Genting Highlands, about 20 miles north of Kuala Lumpur, this 3-star hotel has 6,118 rooms in its dual 23-story towers.

2. World’s largest hostel - Danhostel, Copenhagen, Denmark

Determining the world’s largest hostel based on bed numbers is hard but the title appears to go to the Danhostel Copenhagen City (http://www.danhostel.dk) with 1,020 beds in 192 rooms. This former office building has 16 floors and a central location.

3. World’s largest swimming pool - San Alfonso Del Mar, Chile This new resort about 60 miles west of Santiago has been recognized as having the world’s largest crystalline pool by the Guinness World Records judges. It’s actually a saltwater lagoon that runs for over a full kilometer between the ocean and many apartment buildings that is under completion and covers 20 acres. It is 115 feet deep at one end, and holds 66 million gallons of water, which is about 100 times as much as a typical Olympic size pool.

4. World’s largest museum attraction - Titanic Museum in Branson, Missouri, United States

This half-scale ship (http://www.titanicbranson.com) has only been open since 2006, and already more than 1 million guests have walked an elegant replica of the Titanic’s Grand Staircase, and stood on the mighty ship’s bridge. Your visit begins when they hand you the boarding pass of an actual Titanic passenger, and you check out the Memorial Wall to see if they lived or died.

5. World’s largest casino - Venetian Macao Resort hotel

The total casino space at this resort (http://www.venetianmacao.com/en/home.aspx) that opened in August 2007 is about 550,000 square feet, with 870 gaming tables and more than 3,400 slot machines to go along with their 3,000 suites and 1 million square feet of retail space.

6. World’s longest beach - Praia do Cassino, Brazil

Praia do Cassino (Cassino Beach) on the southern coast of Brazil stretches 152 miles from the channel that connects the Lagoa do Patos lake to the Atlantic Ocean near Rio Grande in the north to the border with Uruguay in the south. You can drive and park on it, so it also seems to double as a highway in places.

7. World’s largest airport - King Fahd International Airport in Dammam, Saudi Arabia(http://www.the-saudi.net/kfia/)

The actual airport of the site is only about 14 square miles, but it sits on a property that is around 300 square miles, making it more than 6 times as large as the entire city of San Francisco, and more than twice as large as second-place Mirabel International in Montreal.

8. World’s largest shopping mall - South China Mall

The South China Mall (http://www.southchinamall.com.cn) in Dongguan crushed all rival mega malls as of 2005 with around 6.5 million square feet of retail space and 7 different wings with themes of Amsterdam, California, the Caribbean, Egypt, Paris, Rome, and Venice, and, of course, an amusement park. Missing? Businesses and customers with few of the 1,500 retail spaces occupied in the suburban mall 70 miles north of Hong Kong.

9. World’s tallest statue of a turtle riding a snowmobile - Tommy Turtle, in Bottineau, North Dakota, United States

As it’s hard to pinpoint the world’s tallest statue so BootsnAll instead chose a less controversial category. Tommy the Turtle stands 30 feet and he’s riding a 34-foot-long snowmobile just about 10 miles south of the Canadian border.

Can a grocery manager give me only 8 hours a week because of my schedule?

Saturday, July 26th, 2008

I work at a local grocery store that is union. I am working 2 jobs and at the grocery store, I let them give me the closing hours since they have enough people during the morning. I gave my manager my hours like 2 months ago. I called him one day to let him know I couldnt work one day that he gave me because on my availibty sheet I request 3 days that I can’t work. the other 4 days are at the grocery store. He was complaining that I was limiting my schedule. He was threating me that he was going to give me only 8 hours a week. In my union’s contract, it states that no part-time worker can work less than 14 hours. Is he allowed to do this, if not, should I contact my union rep?

If in the contract is states that you cannot work less than 14 hours per week, there’s no legal way he can make you work 8 hours per week only.

If he actually gives you a schedule with only 8 hours per week on it, then I would contact your rep. Until then, all he has is empty threats to get you to work more for him.
